The Factory Five ’33 starts with a robust tubular steel space frame that is far stronger than anything Ford could have conceived. The fiberglass panels capture many design elements of the Model B (including that magnificent front grille) but with a sleeker, more modern appearance. The matte black paint is adorned with black vinyl flames that give the car a sinister look. The hardtop is a single piece with an integral windshield. This top can be removed and a slick roadster style windshield installed (note the uninterrupted windshield frame). This gives the car two radically different looks, especially with or without the engine side covers. There is also a removable roll bar along with dual power windows.

The engine is a crate Boss 302 from Ford Performance rated at 340hp – more than enough power for a car this light! This setup combines a 4-bolt block with aluminum heads, a roller camshaft, and 9:1 pistons. It’s an ideal street setup that sounds terrific and gets along fine with pump gas and modern (no-zinc) oil. The transmission is a C4 automatic with an external cooler, while the rear end is a Ford 8.8”. This hot rod also has 4-wheel disc brakes and adjustable coilovers. I like how the exposed independent front suspension with its inboard springs adds to the car’s aesthetics, and lets people know this car is something different.

The red and black interior expands on the clean look with a minimum of dials, switches, or gadgets. The dash has just a center digital gauge cluster, while the switches for the headlights, fan, and power windows are all mounted down low. The bucket seats are adjustable and are both equipped with 4-point harnesses. There is a tilt steering column for good ingress/egress along with a center console for storage. There are also self-cancelling turn signals and a horn. The finished trunk houses the battery along with the fuel filler and a fire extinguisher.
