1969 Chevrolet Camaro SS Coupe
The first-generation Chevrolet Camaro appeared in Chevrolet dealerships in September 1966 for the 1967 model year on a brand-new rear-wheel drive GM F-body platform and was available as a 2-door, 2 plus 2 seat, hardtop (no "B" or center pillar) or convertible, with the choice of either a straight-six or V8 engine. The first-generation Camaro was built through the 1969 model year.
Exterior
The beneficiary of a full-on restoration the original X22 code car is now bathed in Dover white. A single deep inset headlight is on either side of the black egg crate grille with the SS badge in its center. Orange painted on racing stripes run the entire length of the car stopping only for the roof, then continuing on at the trunk deck and up and over the rear spoiler. Thin orange pinstripes wrap around the front and rear wheel wells and continue on to become spears, the front stopping at mid door, and the back going to the rear of the car. Some chromed faux venting is on either side of the rear quarters. Trimmings for the glass and the bumpers front and back are in excellent condition. The back panel is black and contains a trio of tail lighting on either side forming a horizontal bar. Dual chrome exhaust pipes peek out the rear, and 15 inch Keystone wheels are all around. These wheels are wrapped with BFG raised white letter Radial T/A's from 2009.
Interior
Black vinyl door panels looking like they just rolled out of the factory show nicely and have shiny actuators and a single crank for the glass. Sleek high back buckets with tall headrests are in front, and a bench is in the back. The seats are in good condition and a center console is seen running between the buckets. It has a padded armrest which is also the door to a storage area, dual cup holder and some wood grain surrounding the Hurst shifter. The dash is looking original as well with deep inset square bezel gauge panels with round gauges within these panels The original steering wheel is on and there is an aftermarket tachometer mounted to the column on drivers left. The angled dash is all black and below is a trio of aftermarket gauges mounted to a chromed panel. A newer retro style digital radio is now installed and now sports a wood panel surround. Nice clean back carpeting in on the floors and above is a black headliner which remains nice and tight. A shout out to the trunk which has the plaid liner and a multi disc CD changer.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a like new orange/red painted block 402ci V8 which has a .060 over bore. It is not original to the car, but it has only 850 miles since it was rebuilt and put in. There is a 4-barrel carburetor on top and a Muncie M20 4-speed manual transmission on back (ca.1964/65). The rear is a 12-bolt 3.31 posi which is numbers matching to this car. All shined up under this hood, chromed valve coverings a like new radiator and the sealed air cleaner hood all is looking great.
Undercarriage
Just solid black metal panels and unibody construction. No rust and the bottom orange end of the engine just gleams against the black. Dual chambered exhaust is making its way to the back of the car, passing power disc braking in front, and power drum braking on back. Independent coil springs are on the front, and leaf springs are on the back.
Drive-Ability
The 402 cuber fired right up and off to the test track I sped. It's hard not to speed in this beauty as it has plenty of power, smooth shifting, and good handling. Braking was bias free on the panic stop test which I always do first! All functions worked as well and good as this car looks and runs.
