1973 Volkswagen Wesfalia Camper Van Two Owner Nice RV
This two-owner 1973 Volkswagen Wesfalia camper van is a real throwback. While RVs today can be 40 feet long and weigh 30,000 pounds, with multiple slides and 1,200 foot-pound diesel engines, this one keeps things much simpler - and a whole lot smaller. We’re talking less than 15 feet and 3,500 pounds. Yet you still have a well-featured camper with all the charisma of a 70’s Volkswagen, and with a rare first-year automatic transmission to boot. This example has been with the same owners for the last 35 years. It has been well maintained throughout its lifetime.
It wears an older repaint in its original orange color. The body and underside are remarkably solid with only some bubbling ahead of the left rear wheelwell. It is quite exceptional for an early 70’s VW! This one also comes with an attaching tent kit as shown in the gallery. The original 4-cylinder engine received a complete rebuild in May 2020 with only 1,100 miles since. While it runs perfectly, this is a 1.7L 62hp engine so you need to be careful merging with 70 mph traffic! This bus is also equipped with the optional automatic transmission that was first offered for this model year and can be hard to find. Note the transmission does exhibit a 2-3 flare under hard acceleration. Brakes, steering, and suspension are all in good operating condition. The tires are Michelin P195/75R14. They have about 3,000 miles and look good cosmetically but are from 2001.The interior is a real treat and demonstrates what these old VW campers are all about. Let’s start in front where the dual bucket seats, dashboard, and door panels are all in great condition. Same with the headliner panel. All the gauges and instruments work properly as well. Next up is the main living area which offers a forward facing bench seat and a rearward single seat with a flip-up table between them. There is also a refrigerator and sink pedestal with flip-up work surfaces. A small closet is also provided along with a few 120V outlets. In the back is a bed section that adjoins the folding bench seat. The interior is adorned with carpeting and plaid curtains all around as was the motif in 1973. A small Coleman stove is also included along with the previously mentioned tent attachment. These Westfalia campers are in a class all by themselves and represent the 1970’s as much as any other vehicle. Further, they are very efficient and make great use of a small space. This one is in nice condition throughout with limited ownership and a solid history. Not to mention you can really take it camping!
