When Chevrolet introduced the Corvette Sting Ray for 1963, it advanced the brand exponentially and stunned both the press and public alike. The new car took cues from the 1961 and 1962 Corvettes while bringing about an entirely new body, and a chassis that was so well engineered, it sustained largely unchanged through the 1982 model year. Nicely too, it was available as a coupe or convertible for the first time ever. The Sting Ray was an instant hit, a design icon that still captures imaginations and fuels dreams today. Initially powered by the 327 CI V-8 engine, it was capable of delivering between 250 HP and 360 HP and was available with a choice of three transmissions and six axle ratios. As time unfolded, the 396 CI V-8 and 427 CI V-8 also became options, turning the Corvette into one of the most respected sports cars in the world.Part of the beauty of the new Corvette, especially as a coupe, was its ability to be driven daily. The car was docile and useful, weatherproof and reliable. Even as a convertible, people used them daily—but its Jekyll and Hyde personality also allowed weekend warriors to tear up the tracks on the weekends. Granted, as time marched on, older cars became less attractive for daily use—they heat up in modern traffic, most don’t have air conditioning, and for those that had it, the cooling wasn’t all that great. That’s what makes this 1965 Corvette convertible something wonderful.Presented in red with a matching red interior and a black top, it rolls on the popular turbine wheels with spinners wrapped in whitewall tires. The stance is Corvette perfect, and the overall look is that of an absolute time capsule. The only visual telltale sign that something is a little “off” might be the classic Hurst white gear knob with a gate for six gears. This brings us to the magic under the hood. While the interior and exterior look ready for a concours event, the Sting Ray has been fitted with an LS3 V-8 engine linked to the 6-speed manual transmission. An aluminum radiator keeps all things cool in the engine bay, while modern air conditioning keeps passengers chill on hot days. Breathing through shorty headers, the exhaust note is noticeable, authoritative. Equipped with a Delco radio, factory gauges, power steering and a wooden sport steering wheel, this Corvette is likely the best of both worlds—classically styled, restored to original but powered by a modern drivetrain that appears to have been very cleanly and professionally installed. Cars in great condition runs and drives well.
