1950 Mercury WOODY WAGON Royal Bronze Maroon Poly
Historically, Henry Ford and the Ford Motor Company began building Model-T Depot Hack bodies and the earliest “Woody” station wagon bodies at its Iron Mountain, Michigan, factory beginning July 12, 1921 and continued doing so in one form or another until 1961 when Henry Ford II deemed the Iron Mountain facility no longer profitable and sold it off. When speaking of post-World War II Ford woody production, the high-water mark would undoubtedly have to be the late-1940s to early-1950s when Ford produced the basic coachwork for its Ford and Mercury woody wagons and wood-sided “Sportsman” model in Dearborn, then shipped the semi-completed rolling chassis off to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to Iron Mountain where the steel structures were hand fitted with the finest oak and other woods from that region, painted and shipped to eagerly awaiting Ford and Lincoln-Mercury dealers. ThisRoyal Bronze Maroon Poly , 1950 Mercury Woody Wagon is 1 of 1,746 designed by Bob, E.T. Gregorie and produced by Ford’s Iron Mountain facility that year. Historically, it represents the last year that Ford exclusively used 100% wood construction with plastic veneers being introduced on the 1951 models. Powered by a 255/110 HP Mercury flathead V-8 engine and Borg Warner 3-speed manual transmission with overdrive, this Merc features heavy-duty rear leaf springs. Exterior treatments include accessory bumper guards and rear-mounted spare. Inside, its chocolate-brown and wood-grain interior gives you an earthy or woodsy feeling; you will also find a chrome and wood-grain dash, heater and defrost, tan rubber floor mats and much more. This “rolling lumber yard”—a common term used to affectionately describe wood-body vehicles from that era—also features wide white wall tires.
This special woody was built by Russ Gagliano, Mercury club President and was a five year, Frame-Off restoration. During the restoration process there were some tasteful upgrades including 12volt electrical system, Offenhauser heads, Offenhauser dual carburetor intake with dual carburetors, electric fuel pump and dual exhaust. There is a hidden upgraded Sony AM/FM CD PLAYER with four speakers that sounds fantastic!
The paint has a deep shine and reflects like a mirror. The fit and finish is fantastic and all of the chrome and trim glistens like new. The wood on this Woody is simply breath taking to view and touch.
