It was a Muscle Car Classic of the 1960's and 1970's. In early 1963, General Motors management issued a ban in auto racing. At the time, Pontiac's advertising and marketing approach was based on performance, and racing was an important component of the strategy. With GM's ban on factory-sponsored racing, Pontiac's young visionary management turned its attention to emphasizing street performance. The GTO was basically a violation of GM policy, but since the GTO was an option package and not standard equipment, it fell into a loophole on the policy. The GTO was restyled for the 1965 model year. It had Pontiac's characteristic vertically stacked quad headlights. The rest of the changes led to GTO's new simulated hood scoop and the cosmetic change was the black egg-crate grill.
